Text: Philippians 4:6-7

(6) Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with
thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;

(7) and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and
minds through Christ Jesus.   (NKJ)

Anxious = Care

Greek = forbidding the continuance of an action already going on.   Or = Stop perpetually
worrying about even one thing!

The same Greek word is found in Matthew 6:25 which is translated “take no thought.” We
have the same force of the Greek here ...“Stop perpetually worrying.”

Christians are to be responsible for their needs and their families and to care about and be
concerned for others, but we are not to worry, fret or have undue concern.

Worrying is bad because it is a subtle form of distrust in God. When we worry, we are
saying that we don’t trust that God will provide and even doubt that He cares or that He
can handle our situation.

Worry leads to a helpless, hopeless feeling that causes one to be paralyzed. But Paul was
showing us that prayer is an anticdote to worry.

Let’s Look at:

I Peter 5:7 = Casting all your care upon Him for He cares for you.

The word “care” is the same Greek work that is in Philippians 4:6 (worrying)

The word “cast” is not the ordinary word in Greek which means “to throw” but one which
signifies a definite ACT of the WILL in committing to Him our worries, giving them up to
Him!

This includes praying about everything. No request is too small, difficult or unimportant to
God. Paul encouraged the believers to pray in everything—good times and bad—giving
petitions and thanksgivings to God. It may seem impossible not to worry about anything,
but Paul explained that this can happen if we truly give our worries to God. Worry and
prayer cannot coexist.

The word for prayer is a general term meaning worshipful conversation with God, while
petition refers to a prayer with a sense of need (the Greek word was also used for requests
between people)

Thanksgiving focuses on the attitude of one’s heart in approaching God.

Prayer combats worry by creating in us a thankful heart.

We as Believers should come to God in prayer, thankful for His tremendous blessings
already bestowed, and for the certainty that He will answer our prayer.

When we focus on God’s great love for us and the many prayers he has already answered,
we will have no room for worry about whether He will continue to answer.

A request refers to directly asking God’s help regarding specific needs.

Prayer combats worry by building trust. That means we are through worrying about the
matter!! We will let God assume the responsibility for our welfare.

Now let's look at verse 7 of our Text:

(Verse 7) and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts
and minds through Christ Jesus.   (NKJ)
Peace = quietness, rest will guard (protect) your heart!!!

For He Cares for you = Your welfare is His concern!!!
