If one is to live an overcoming Christian life, he must have the Biblical
character trait of endurance. A clear difference exists between the world's
interpretation of endurance and the Scriptures. For example, the world says, “What can’t
be cured must be endured.” This is hardly the endurance of the Scriptures. The world’s
type of endurance provides NO joy at all! It is forced submission to necessity.
The endurance of the Bible is of a happier character.
In Acts 16: 22-30, the imprisonment of Paul and Silas at Philippi is a good example of
Christian endurance. Their situation was not accepted in a joyless manner. They had no
choice in what came their way, only in their response to the given circumstances. We
don’t have control of the things that come our way, but we do have control of how we
respond to the given circumstances. There are 3 ingredients that make up the recipe for
this endurance. Let’s examine them carefully.
1. FAITH (Shield of Faith)
Ephesians 6:13, 16….”Take ye on the whole armor of god…Above all, taking the shield
of faith, wherewith yea shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.”
Without the protection of this shield, one would find endurance impossible! A shield is
not a weapon. It is a protective item of armor, guarding the soldier from blows. We have
no control over what comes our way while under satan’s attacks, only in how we
respond. This shield enables us to take a licking and keep on ticking! I John 5:4 “This is
the victory that overcomes the world, even our Faith.” Endurance is a character trait all
Christians must add to their faith.
LOVE (Love is also a Fruit of the Spirit)
I Corinthians 13:7….”Love endureth all things…”
This love enables us to love, accept and forgive without limitations. Love(charity) covers
a multitude of sins (I Peter 4:8) and bears all things. (I Cor. 13:7) Our Lord empowers His
children to endure by this love He kindles in their heart. Where Agape Love is present,
power to endure is present.
INNER VISION (Not sight, but insight)
Hebrews 11:24…"By faith Moses, when he was grown, refused to be called the son of
Pharaoh’s daughter. (25) Choosing rather to suffer afflictions with the people of God,
than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. (26) Esteeming the reproach of Christ
greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompense of
the reward. (27) By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he
endured as seeing Him who is invisible."
Moses endures as seeing Him who is invisible and because of his inner vision. What you
are and what you become largely depends on what you see. And what you see depends
on whether your vision is High or Low. If you are to endure, you must be able to see
above circumstances! Job endured, saying “(though I can’t see or feel God) I know My
Redeemer liveth” (Job 19:25). To see the invisible when circumstances are against us is
to have the power to win! Elijah prayed for his servant: “Lord… open his eyes that he
may see.” (2 Kings 6:17) Jesus, the Master, demonstrated endurance like none other. He
did not falter even in Gethsemane: His ability to endure was equal to the Agony of
Calvary. The unclouded vision of His Father’s face kept Him going. Hebrews 12:2 tells us
the key for our endurance is “Looking unto Jesus”.
Remember our Text …
Matthew 24:13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
James 5:11 Behold, we count those blessed who endured. You have heard of the
endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord’s dealings that the Lord is full
of compassion and is merciful.
Matthew 24:13 But he that shall endure unto the
end, the same shall be saved.
James 5:11 Behold, we count those blessed
who endured. You have heard of the endurance
of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord’s
dealings that the Lord is full of compassion and
is merciful.
Endure means to stay under (behind), remain,
bear trials, have fortitude, persevere: abide,
endure, (take) patient, suffer, tarry behind.
